I heard on the radio this morning that today is the first official day of hurricane season. That‚Äôs right in case you didn’t know, you heard it here first: Today is the first official day of hurricane season. I bet all you people out there in California and beyond had no idea of that fact. Can you believe that? An actual first day of hurricane season?
So now we add hurricane season to the growing list of famous first days:
Opening day (baseball)
Opening day (fishing season – unless of course you fly fish)
The first day of spring
The first day of summer
The first day of fall
The first day of winter
The first day of the rest of your life
Did I miss any?
Why is it necessary to have a first day of hurricane season? Is there a tornado season complete with a first day in the mid-west? Is there a rainy season in the north-west (dumb question, of course there is). Is there a first day of smog season in the LA area?
What are we to do on the first day of hurricane season? Should we board up the windows, batten down the hatches, trim the hedges and have a hurricane party? What do you wear or bring to a hurricane party? I’m surprised the retail industry has not been swept up in hurricane fever. I can see the circulars now: “Everything you need to look good and to enjoy the upcoming hurricane season”
Do the meteorologists and other hurricane specialists argue over what names to include in the A-Z hurricane list? I bet they exchange money under the table to include the given names of someone they know. “Good news sweetie, they’re going to name the next hurricane after you.” How long will it be till some company licenses the hurricane naming system. Imagine the newscast: “In other news today, hurricane Bounty, the quilted quicker picker upper tore through downtown Miami beach . . .”
Now I know that hurricanes are serious. I’ve been in a few. I just thought it was funny that there would be an official first day of the hurricane season. I’ll be interested to hear the take from the Florida contingents as to their thoughts on the first day of Hurricane season.

Having had the pleasure of riding out 3 hurricanes last year and helping out with a fourth, “Ivan” in Pensacola, I feel somewhat qualified to give you some recommendations for a “Hurricane Party.”
1. Wear something blue. It will match the numerous blue tarps that everyone uses to cover the damaged or missing roofs.
2. Wear very dark sunglasses. This will match the lighting inside a home that is boarded up for 3 hurricanes.
3. To create the correct ambiance, if you hold your party in the summer, turn off the A/C. If you’re a “post-modern hurricane aficionado” and you’re holding your party in the winter, turn up the heat has high as you dare. This will mimic the inside temperature of a home that has gone days without power.
4. And finally, do something to help out the host. This will remind you of the “best” aspect of surviving multiple hurricanes: neighbors helping out neighbors.
Enjoy the party and pray for all of us along East Coast that this season will be a little less active than last year.

I would add……..The first day of hunting season (deer, etc.)?
Also, NASCAR has an identifiable season but not a specific “opening date.”
