I know, I know you woke up today worked all day with nothing to read. A thousand apologies. I couldn’t get to a computer until now. So here’s what you missed.

Madison called me from school and asked if she and a couple of friends could stay after school to watch a basketball game. I said “sure” and “I’ll meet you there.” I thought it might be fun to watch a middle school basketball game. Though fun was not exactly the right word. Painful is a closer descriptive.

The home team, by the end of the 3rd period managed to make it to seven points. The visitors were well on their way to 20 points. Greg, you will appreciate this. In the first two minutes I wondered why the refs where just running up and down the court pulling up their pants. They were not calling anything. Then I realized, if they started calling anything the game would go on all night. I’ve seen less contact at hockey games.

The time was not wasted. After watching the cheerleaders do that vodoo that they do all three girls decided they were not going to be cheerleaders. Words like that just make me beam with pride. Another parenting success story.

That brought back memories of 30 years ago when I first started officiating basketball. First year officials always got the worst assignments. We’d drive for miles to work a jr. high girl’s game that would go for three hours easily and get a check for $6.00.
Eventually girl’s basketball became competitive and they actually learned how to play the game, though still on a far different level than guys. But you still learned to make a ton of “no calls” just to keep the game moving.

I’m posting this almost 9 hours later and apparently I’m the only real friend you have out there … seems if you don’t post your blog in a timely manner, people just don’t even bother to check in later.
Hope you can appreciate how much I am devoted to our friendship! Far more than those umrka’s out there!

Hey, now! I was busy on Friday managing portant US government nuksq issues!! I could tell you, but then you wouldn’t be able to read about it in the paper.

That was supposed to be a joke.

They can’t all be golden, you know.

As for the blog, my first job was as a soccer refereee for the city’s league (city of Garland, TX, by the way). Even after I was a newly minted ref, I called everything. I guess that’s why the games always took so long.

I sympathize with refs, umps, and other sports officiators at whom are yelled all manner of expletives usually having something to do with mating and mothers. It’s hard to see everything on the field of play. And in soccer, it’s one against 22. (Well, it’s 3 against 22, but the linesmen are there for calling offside, not penalties.)

Sorry — my hands slipped while typing. I’m thinking now of that Saturday Night Live sketch where the sportscasters are punished by having to call the women’s basketball games.

My only sporting expertise is with the VHSL Scholastic Bowl.
