Big time congratulations go out today to Dr. Paul Begin. Yesterday, Dr. Begin successfully defended his doctoral dissertation having completed his studies at the University of Virginia and received his PhD in Spanish.
It is a grueling process. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. So way to go Dr. Begin, I for one am proud of you and appreciate your accomplishment.
Dr. Paul and Brooke leave tomorrow driving to Malibu, California. Paul will be on faculty teaching Spanish at Pepperdine. Pray for them and their journey. Dr. Begin is my brother-in-law - for those of you who do not know. In between writing and defending his dissertation he reads this blog so leave him your well wishes.

To Dr. Begin and Brooke–God-speed on your journey and as you begin a new chapter of your lives. I send prayers for safe travel and well-being.
Yes, congratulations! Now go enjoy your career and have a safe cross country trip. I’ve made that drive a few times … hope you can enjoy the scenery along the way. It’s beautiful. When you get settled in, come see us in Long Beach … we’ll take you out to lunch and send Randy the bill.
I’m curious to know the subject of the dissertation, especially if the title is something like, “The Language of Argentines: Similar to Spanish.”
Wishing you a safe journey, blessings in Malibu, and savvy for managing faculty politics.

Congratulations Paul although I must take exception with Randy. I’m sure being Randy’s brother-in-law helped prepare you for the rigors of defending your thesis!
If you ever decide to drive back across country to Florida, look me up in Cocoa. We’ll take you to Sonny’s BBQ and send the bill to Randy as well.

Man, them Smith girls marry good, don’t they? I mean, smart…good looking…spiritual men.
I thought about saying “Except for Beth.” there…but the older I get, the less I feel like being nasty. Truth is, Beth did darn fine her own self. Sigh. It’s no fun getting old and nice. It leaves me feeling rather wiswfq.
Props to Steve for being nice. Are we starting another “positive week?” Raise the shields #1.
Now that I know Randy I would agree that Beth made the right call. Sure wish I could entice you guys to beautiful, stormy Central Flordia. The weather isn’t always dtismky.
Don’t joke around, I’m dealing with a very real case of road fear. A little house fear too.
I get nervous when the cars go “rrczn”.
Steve - your last wv reminded me of something my son used to say when he was a toddler. As we were potty training him, we emphasized to him that he needed to tell us when he needed to sit on the potty. Seems to work better that way.
Any way, one day he walks up to Barb and me and says, “Mommy, Daddy, I need to e-r-s-t-u-v!” From that point on he would make it a point to whisper to us when ever he needed to go potty, “Dad, I need to go e-r-s-t-u-v.”
He was word verifying before wv became cool.

Big applause for Fifi. We are very proud of you, and know how hard you have worked. Can’t wait to see the new surf pad. It has been great having you close, and we will miss you terribly.
Good job, Paul.
Randy, thanks for honoring him today.
