I was watching a little television last night and had the most difficult time. There appears to be a shortage of creativity and clever writing as most of the stories rely upon sex and off color humor to generate laughs.

I remember a commedian talking once (though I forget his name) about comedians who are funny and those who are not. The comedians who are not funny rely upon foul language to generate laughs. The comedians who are funny can make you laugh with every day, mundane stuff.

I’m not one of those anti-television types. I enjoy the tranquility and the mind-numbing relaxation that can only result from the tele. I realize there have always been shows that have pushed the boundaries of decency and morality. I like shows for the stories, the plots, the characters. I could do without all the other “amenities.”

The current popular shows makes it hard to:

think about the things that are good and worthy of praise. Think about the things that are true and honorable and right and pure and beautiful and respected. (Philippians 4:8)

Anybody watched anything worthwhile lately?

WIfe and the kids have been watching the Muppet Show first season and, though it took the kids a while to catch on, they are now thoroughly loving it.

I would watch, but the humor goes way over my head. And I really don’t get the piggy-frog thing. Stretches my limits.

Lisa and I were talking about our TV habits the other night. We realized that we watch about 4 hours a week. Storytelling is becoming a thing of the past.

West Wing is telling a very good story this year. The Office usually makes me howl. Otherwise I just long for baseball season.

Most of what I watch is either historical or DVDs (Tool Time, Andy Griffith series, M*A*S*H, etc) that I’ve purchased so I can avoid the less-than-appealing stuff being aired these days. I’m not anti-tele either, but it’s been a couple or three years (maybe more) since I’ve found anything on network that interests me. Still trying to figure out why we even pay for DishTV when it offers so little.

I find Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to be a really positive show. Not a week goes by that I don’t end up in tears over the heart-breaking stories and the displays of encouragment given to families (maybe not a big selling point to the males of the audience). It’s one show where they don’t seem to have a problem using phrases like “We are so blessed”, “God is so good” and “You are an answer to prayer”.

Does Sportscenter count as a show?

Are there other channels besides Discovery, History, and ESPN?

I did like T.V. Land until they pulled their schedule of Dragnet, Adam-12, and Emergency. I had a crush on Dixie.

Sad to admit but we do get a kick out of “King of the Hill.”

“I sell propane and propane accessories.”

I’m with Sandra. Emeril Lagasse rocks! Our line-up is pretty much the same every night. Wheel of Fortune at 6:30, Emeril Live at 7:00, and after that, if we are still awake, we might watch something on the Travel Channel or Discovery. I keep wanting an big-screen TV and Doris keeps wondering why?

About comedians………you know the foursome that Foxworthy is in? Larry the Cable Guy, Ron White, and somebody else whose name escapes me. These guys are funny, most of them, until they open their mouths! Foxworthy keeps it somewhat clean for a while, then off he goes. Larry and his attempt at humor with prayer offends me. Ron White is funny. He’s just funny. He’d be funny if all he did was stand there with that stupid look on his face. But then he opens his mouth! My reading in II Peter this morning reminded me of “wholesome thinking.” Can’t do it with most of the movies, TV, and a lot of novels these days.
I’m not anti-tele, either, but this is a particular soapbox of mine, so let me just stop. :)

I’ll take a heaping spoonful of college basketball over anything else that is on. I enjoy watching talented coaches convince their cast of individuals to play as a team. The best teams highlight unselfishness and accountability while they play every minute as if it were their last. In addition, a few hundred paint-dipped fans just inches from the court provide a lively backdrop for their struggle.

What’s on the tele? The tele?
Sounds like you’ve been watching the BBC.

    “What’s on the telly?”

    “Looks like a penguin.”

    Heh. Love Python.

My two most recent favs are no longer on the air, Everybody Loves Raymond & Frasier. Both had excellent writing & delivery, although Frasier in particular seemed to rely more and more on sexual escapades, affairs, etc. the last few years.

The Weather Channel has some excellent writing, it’s always so ……….unpredictable.

Someone at our church is starting a Sunday school class based on the series Lost. Never having seen the show I’m not sure what it will be about but I’ve heard of other TV shows being used for classes. And remember the old book by Robert Short, “Parables of Peanuts?”
