Parent teacher conference, three words with so many different implications for Steve, Cecil, and Peggy (and the rest of you teachers out there).
We had parent teacher conferences today. Or in Madison’s case . . . parent student conferences. Madison is now in middle school and things have changed a bit. Her conference consisted of her telling us how she was progressing academically. She told us about her classes, her projects and which areas were going well and which areas needed improvement.
For fifteen minutes Madison talked about her academic progress as Beth and I along with Madison’s teacher listened attentively. I enjoyed listening to Madison speak but couldn’t help having the following two thoughts:
1) Why was the teacher not talking about the academic progress of the student?
2) Why did I have to get out of bed early on a day off to go hear Madison tell me something she could have told me at lunch?
Following our parent student conference at Madison’s school we drove over to Reese’s school for a true parent teacher conference. We met with his teachers for 15 minutes and heard many wonderful things about Reese. We also heard some specific areas of improvement he could make which struck me as funny because my dad is visiting with us for a few days and I thought:
He probably heard the same things about me when I was Reese’s age in school!
