I’m not sure I’m the type of person who would do well as a road warrior. I like to travel (every once in a while) but don’t particularly like the days leading up to the travel.

Before traveling I always have a million or more things that must get done which activates some circuit in my brain and go into youth rally mode.

Youth rally mode is the endless pace of frenetic activity that extends into the wee hours of the morning.

I know people who fret and panic over the actual travel. I fret and panic over getting ready to travel. Sleep on a plane is not an optional activity it is required.

I’m also notorious for starting some insane project in the midst of travel chaos. I’ve already mentioned the building of the cabinet the night before going to Yosemite. If you don’t remember, the key words to jog your memory would be mother-in-law and bathrobe.

I’ll be traveling soon to Mexico to prep for our summer house building trip. The circuit has been activated. I’ve got a million or more things that must get done. Oh and I started organizing and compiling, ripping and digitizing our entire music collection.

Some men are probably from mars. Right now I feel like a resident of the planet imanidiot.

    Perhaps we’re kindred spirits?
My wife was flabbergasted last Saturday because I got up early to wash my Expedition before taking it in to the shop for an 8am appointment.

I got tired just reading about all that!

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since the last trip to Mexico????

Guilt…it’s the guilt of leaving your wife with the kids and responsibilities you are abandoning. So you try to soothe your concsience by working on inane projects which actually make everyone else around you even more crazy. By the time you leave, they are ready for you to be gone.

I don’t like traveling or getting ready for traveling. I do like bumming off relatives when I get to their place, though.

Since you will be traveling to Long Beach and staying with us, forget all those projects in Arlington … you can clean out our garage! And paint the trim on the house. And give Chipper a much-needed bathing. And wax our car. And clean the windows. And you can do it all secure in the knowledge that you won’t make me feel the least bit guilty.

I think cd2lab is onto something. Back in the military days my wife and I noticed an increase of petty arguing before I would go out for deployment. We figured it was to make the good-bye part easier. Perhaps this is just your way of channeling the tension that traveling creates.

That’s why I don’t go on vacation very often - it’s just too much work getting all my work done for the time I’m gone before I go. I can’t seem to walk away from my responsiblities and think “oh, someone will take care of it while I’m gone” (because I know from experience, they won’t). Maybe it’s the o.c. in my personality, or the fact that I know someone will ask me at the next elders meeting after I return why I hadn’t taken care of _________.

But washing the car you guys? That’s just crazy talk!

    John - I know, I know but I just can’t help myself.
