Those Clever Commercials

Posted under Blog Thoughts

It’s official.  The first steps were taken yesterday to leave the PC world and join the MAC fraternity.  Brad blew into town and brought the way of the MAC with him.  I’ve debated switching several times over the years but never had the hands on like the past 6 months.  I can’t believe I did not switch earlier.  But the timing is right with the new intel based MAC machines.  I’m just praying my stock portfolio which includes both INTEL and APPLE can live long and prosper.

The sun is shining!  It has not rained for a whole 12 hours!  I have not seen any rainbows but for now the skies are clear.  I finished clearing out my office yesterday.  My credenza, desk, and stereo speakers seem to have born the brunt of the water damage.

Here are the Biblical texts I’ll present Sunday as if they were the actual text for my message:  Leviticus 13:47-59 and Leviticus 14:33-57.  What do you think?

Life Is Like A Box of Swiss Chocolates

Posted under Blog Thoughts

With help that I greatly appreciate from a few others I have completed packing my office.  The flooding forced the packing to occur a head of schedule.  That will probably work out to be a good thing in the long run.  All that is left is to remove my desk, credenza, computer desk AND my fish tank.  I’m thinking with all the water the office took on (4 inches to be exact) I should just drain the tank onto the floor.  The news we got yesterday from the insurance company was this:  You are not covered.  You don’t have a flood policy.

The Oregon contigency left Tuesday and the Swiss contigency arrived yesterday afternoon.  I have yet to see (or taste) the chocolate.  I may have to start rummaging through some suitcases.

Some appropriate thoughts for the day:

Psalms 124 (NCV)  What if the LORD had not been on our side?  What if the LORD had not been on our side when we were attacked?  When they were angry with us, they would have swallowed us alive.  They would have been like a flood drowning us; they would have poured over us like a river.  They would have swept us away like a mighty stream.  Praise the LORD, who did not let them chew us up.  We escaped like a bird from the hunter’s trap. The trap broke, and we escaped.  Our help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

Prophetic Theme

Posted under Blog Thoughts

It is now early evening Monday and it has been raining since Sunday evening.  The intensity and volume of the rain has been amazing.  We’ve never seen a rainfall like this since our time in Arlington.  Our basement flooded last night so my brother-in-law and I took turns running the sump pump.  The church basement flooded as well (including my office).  We were up until 1AM at the church and later here at the house.

What a treat we had on Saturday.  We took a lunch cruise on the Potomac river and got a water view of the monuments and sights of DC.

Our band played well Saturday night and it was fun to have my sister and brother-in-law join us for the event.

Today I began to pack up my books - the flooded offfice has accelarated my packing timeline.

We spent the afternoon at the Dulles Air & Space museum.  I’ll include some pictures later.

Hope your Monday was a dry one!

Weekend Update

Posted under Blog Thoughts

I am chuckling about the passion Stumptown has for not having Mexican food for breakfast.  If you have not read his post on food rules, you should.

Madison is out of school, yesterday was her last day.  Reese has to go until 1PM today.  That means this afternoon I will be the parent of a 7th grader and a 5th grader.

My sister and brother-in-law are in town visiting.  They will be going, along with Beth and Madison, to the art museums downtown today.  Yours truly will be setting up equipment with John, my ever faithful roadie, to prepare for our rehearsal tonight and our praise band concert tomorrow night.

Some mixed emotions as it will be fun to play with my brother-in-law and hopefully sister.  But it will be sad since it will be our last, in the forseable future, to play with Marisa, Ricardo, Janet and Jayna.

Over the next few days / weeks I will be posting pictures from the DC area as we visit again with our steady flow of guests.  Keep checking the photos page for the updates.

Breakfast Tacos

Posted under Blog Thoughts

Greg has a favorite breakfast place in Long Beach called Hoff’s Hut.  If I were the owner I would omit the word Hoff’s and replace it with Jabba’s or Jabba The.  On my last adventure with Greg I ordered Señor Hoff’s Breakfast tacos.

Three soft-fried corn tortillas stuffed with scrambled eggs, chicken, cheese, avocado and spicy dressing.  The plate is served with refried beans of course.  The next time you see Beth make sure and ask her about eating re-fried beans for breakast.

It’s my new favorite breakfast food.  I’ve been working on the recipe, refining the ingredients.   Yummy, Yum Yum! I tried it this morning with bbq chicken which added a new twist.

Anyone else a fan of the breakfast taco?  What other combinations should I be trying?

Cheating God

Posted under Blog Thoughts

What do you think?  Can you cheat God and get away with it?

In what way would you be tempted to cheat God?

What foolish thought could enter our mind leading us to believe that we could cheat God?

Galatians 6:7-8 (NCV)  Do not be fooled: You cannot cheat God. People harvest only what they plant.  If they plant to satisfy their sinful selves, their sinful selves will bring them ruin. But if they plant to please the Spirit, they will receive eternal life from the Spirit.

Tonight, in our mid-week tune-up, we are going to see how this truth played out in the life of Ahab and Jezebel.

If you’re not busy tonight you should stop in and join the discussion.

Can’t You Hear, Can’t You Hear The Thunder?

Posted under Blog Thoughts

An impressive storm system swept through our area last night.  The skies darkened.  We could hear the rumble of thunder in the distance.  I was halfway into cooking the tri-tip on the grill when the heavens opened and rain began to pour.  Rain, thunder and flashes of lightning –  some a little too close – impressive displays of power.

The Bible often describes the voice of God as the sound of thunder.  In fact when the children of Israel heard the thundering voice of God (presumably for the first time) they were afraid.  They begged Moses

Exodus 20:18-21 (NCV)  When the people heard the thunder and the trumpet, and when they saw the lightning and the smoke rising from the mountain, they shook with fear and stood far away from the mountain.  Then they said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak to us, or we will die."  Then Moses said to the people, "Don’t be afraid, because God has come to test you. He wants you to respect him so you will not sin." The people stood far away from the mountain while Moses went near the dark cloud where God was.

Thunder and lightning also served as a warning for disobedience and a call to repentance.  When the same children of Israel asked for a king Samuel said:

1 Samuel 12:16-20 (NCV)  "Now stand still and see the great thing the LORD will do before your eyes.  It is now the time of the wheat harvest. I will pray for the LORD to send thunder and rain. Then you will know what an evil thing you did against the LORD when you asked for a king."  Then Samuel prayed to the LORD, and that same day the LORD sent thunder and rain. So the people were very afraid of the LORD and Samuel.  They said to Samuel, "Pray to the LORD your God for us, your servants! Don’t let us die! We’ve added to all our sins the evil of asking for a king." Samuel answered, "Don’t be afraid. It’s true that you did wrong, but don’t turn away from the LORD. Serve the LORD with all your heart.

My favorite event that incorporates thunder is the worship scene of Revelation 19.  The vivid portrayal of the praises of God’s people sounding like the noise of flooding water and of loud thunder.

Revelation 19:4-6 (NCV)  Then the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures bowed down and worshiped God, who sits on the throne. They said: "Amen, Hallelujah!"  Then a voice came from the throne, saying: "Praise our God, all you who serve him and all you who honor him, both small and great!"  Then I heard what sounded like a great many people, like the noise of flooding water, and like the noise of loud thunder. The people were saying: "Hallelujah! Our Lord God, the Almighty, rules.”

Think about the futility and ridiculous effort to worship God passively.  Yes, I know there are appropriate times of contemplative meditation of silence before the Lord.  We’ve got that side figured out, patented, marketed and for sale on eworship.com!

How can the sound of God’s people declaring “Amen, Hallelujah!” be anything but the sound of flooding water or loud rain?

How can the voices of a great many people saying “Hallelujah!  Our Lord God, the Almighty, reigns” be anything but the sound of flooding water and like the noise of loud thunder?

I need to be reminded, I need to hear the words that come from the throne: “Praise our God, all you who serve him and all you who honor him, both small and great!”

Yes, Praise the Lord!  Hallelujah!  Our Lord God, the Almighty, reigns!  Can you hear the thunder?

Coach of The Year

Posted under Blog Thoughts

Madison, along with five of her Dolphin team members, played in the AGSA All-Star game on Saturday.

6 members of the 15 and 1 Dolphins on the All-Star team can only mean one thing:  SUPERIOR COACHING!

But don’t take my word for it . . .

Chilling Facts

Posted under Blog Thoughts

Today’s post will be the last installment of those wonderful AC facts.  Three major events, relating to air conditioning occured in the 1950’s.

First . . .

1950 - A major study shows that families living in air conditioned homes sleep longer in summer, enjoy their food more, and have more leisure time.

Made me think of the comment meowmix made about her trading the air conditioner they won for fear of getting sick.

Following the study, probably funded by the AC manufacturers . . .

1953 - Room air conditioner sales exceed one million units with demand still exceeding supply.

And now that everyone is going to be spending more time inside - let the laziness begin . . .

1955 - Mass marketing of frozen dinners begins: ads promote "TV dinners."

The rest of the AC timeline is rather boring so I will fast forward  . . .

2006 - The AC is replaced in the Wray house.

Thus bringing to an end the exciting and stimulating thoughts on AC.
