Parking. You don’t have to pay for parking. This is my first and most direct observation about life in Stockton. I know everyone talks about the areas of town to stay away from but you don’t have to pay for parking
Vehicles. There are more trucks and blazers on the road. Not those sissy, city, teal jobs but vintage, bondo, black spray paint jobs with mud tires and dual exhaust. The kind of truck that says "who cares if gas is $6 a gallon, I can burn rubber shifting into three different gears." I’m still on the lookout for a gaggle of pintos.
Art. It seems the local schools have an urban art program involving spray paint and paint by numbers.
Delta breeze. We heard about the 115 degree temperatures. Where we live we can open the windows in the house and this cool breeze comes in off the delta. Not only is it refreshing but we have not had to turn on the AC.
Garbage. They have this one all messed up. Three different containers. One 60 gallon container for yard debri, one 60 gallon container for recycling and one 30 gallon for trash. This of course is an effort to encourage recycling and save our world. They send three different trucks to each house in this city / state to pick up one container a piece. Does anyone else see the irony?

I wonder if they actually save the environment enough to counteract the effect of three truck routes. It’s nice that you get a can for yard debris, though. Funny you should mention garbage, however, because I’ve noticed Arlington’s garbage much more the last two weeks. With my new endeavors in running outdoors with the iPod I’ve learned which neighborhoods have trash on what day. I don’t recommend running at an elevated breathing rate with all the trash laying out!
You sure are doing a lot of “trash talking.” Sorry, couldn’t resist. It sounds like you’re getting acquainted with your new digs.
The type of vehicles you described sounds like vintage West Cocoa transportation.
Opening windows this time of year and not having to use a/c is a very foreign concept to this Florida Boy. We only do that if we’re trying to keep the house from blowing up during a (blog disclaimer – This is an urban legend.) hurricane.
You don’t have to pay for parking? that is fantastic. With the cost of parking now in portland always on the rise, I may start parking in Stockton and flying to portland to save money.
Yeah, we’ve got that 3-trash-pickup thing going on here too. Never made much sense to me. Especially after we found out that they were taking the recycling to the same dump as the regular trash went. And, at least for a while there, were just dumping it with everything else.
Your tax dollars at work. What’s next? Sleeping teachers?
Those trucks sound like what some of the kids drive to school in our town. I saw a kid the other day whose truck was so covered in mud that you could hardly tell the color. Big four wheel drive. That is a statement of “cool” in Alabama. Strange I know.
The number of pick up trucks is amazing.
But don’t mix the two problems. Recycling is one problem while three trucks that pollute is another problem.
