The DMV was swift and painful. We were in and out of there in under two minutes. How can that be possible? Which DMV did you visit? Here are the basics of the conversation as I remember:
Clerk - Good Morning
Me - Good morning, we have an appointment
Clerk - What is the nature of your appointment
Me - Apply for a driver’s license and vehicle registration
Clerk - You will need to fill out these forms, we will need to see a birth certificate, are both vehicles here?
Me - Both vehicles are not here and I was not aware we needed birth certificates.
Clerk - Yes we need to verify the vehicles and need verification of your birth.
Me - Isn’t the fact that I’m standing here talking to you verification of my birth?
The conversation went on for another 30 seconds or so. In and out in under two minutes. It wasn’t totally a waste of time. We discovered a great Latin American Super Mercado and spent some time in the store reminiscing.
The day got better. Our friend Josh Stump (aka Stumptown) called not long after our visit to the DMV and informed us his schedule had changed and was going to have some free time while in our neck of the woods on business. We met for lunch at In-and-Out (if you ever have the chance have your fries animal style) and enjoyed catching up. We spent the entire afternoon playing basketball. A much needed respite from some hectic weeks. Having Josh over, giving him a tour of the house and noticing those things not yet accomplished made us realize how busy we have been the last 5 weeks or so and that we need to finish unpacking.
And now a few words about our leadership retreat and our leadership. It was encouraging. It was fun. The dinner Friday night was great - in all it’s five course goodness! The time we spent on Saturday was truly a breath of fresh ministry air. It is exciting to have a vision and direction for the future.

That last statement you made at the DMV cracked me up. I can just see you standing there with those words tumbling out of your mouth, all the while grinning as your eyes disappear behind the grin!!
I always believed in your “birth.” I hope the DMV concurs. So and Josh spent some time dealing the rock and hitting (hopefully) the open “j.” Did you try any halfcourt granny shots? Is Josh any good? He needs to come to “P-dine” by way of Greg’s for this year’s version of “H-O-R-S-E.”
Good to hear that the Leadership Retreat went well.
First comment - That should read “So you and Josh……
You were actually at the DMV for 7 hours. You entered a time warp, and were completely unaware of it. Thats how powerful they are.
Be very careful spending time with Josh. He is seeking new recruits for Death March 2007.
Glad you had good food and good talks at the weekend. I hope you didn’t go there without your birth certificate.
Perhaps the DMV should rename itself the In-and-Out Burger. Or better yet, maybe partner with them like the gas stations along the interstate have w/the fast food joins. Get a burger while you wait at the DMV trying to prove you were born.
Early warning to you: When you vote in November, take a picture ID. It’s now a federal law. If you don’t have a picture ID, take a birth certificate, again, to prove you were born. Maybe even a picture of yourself when you were born. That might help, although you may have had more hair then.
I’ve seen fake birth certificates that look very real, so even if you were to show me your birth certificate (assuming I was the DMV person) I could not be certain that you were actually born! Be careful out there.
