Meaningless

Some thoughts to consider from God In Search of Man by Abraham Joshua Heschel.

It is customary to blame secular science and anti-religious philosophy for the eclipse of religion in modern society.  It would be more honest to blame religion for its own defeats.  Religion declined not because it was refuted, but because it became irrelevant, dull, oppressive, insipid.

When faith is completely replaced by creed, worship by discipline, love by habit; when the crisis of today is ignored because of the splendor of the past; when faith becomes an heirloom rather than a living fountain; when religion speaks only in the name of authority rather than with the voice of compassion — its message becomes meaningless.

After all the searching, all the learning, all the deeds, all the piety, all the friends, all the wealth….
As Cioran has written: “What a pity that to find God you have to go via faith!”

I have to totally agree with the author. I have seen evidence to validate his opinion…sadly, many times.

There is something about this quote that strikes me quite deeply. I don’t know what it is, but I feel it in my gut somewhere.

Perhaps the saddest thing is to look into a situation where this is occurring and realize that the participants don’t even know that it is happening to them. They keep the torches burning, but have forgotten why they lit them or what they are supposed to use them for. Have to keep the torch going, though. Can’t let it go out.

Wow. Good one. I have nothing else to add. Very true, I think.
