30 Oct 06 Trunk-Or-Treat

Sunday night we hosted our annual Trunk-or-Treat extravaganza.  Members of the church decorate the trunks of their cars park them around the church parking lot and members of our neighborhood, school, church family and friends can make the circuit trunk or treating.  I’m told the event has been steadily growing and picking up momentum over the years.  Last night they counted over 500 participants.

The word on the street was the hay maze was fun but too easy.  Certain participants, by the fifth or sixth time, could run through it with their eyes closed.

I know there are varying opinions regarding Halloween.  I’m in the camp that says keep the costumes and themes away from the dark side and plunder the Egyptians!

We had our Fall Festival (organized, ran, and executed by wife) last night as well. We also do a “Trunk or Treat” following the Fall Festival and this was the largest attendance we’ve ever had. I thought our “trunk” was pretty cool with the spider webs and “fog” from our fog machine. Somebody came by and asked what was up with the “smoke.” I made a “cigarette smoking gesture” and said it was the result of another harsh elders meeting.

Halloween is one of those events that you can go overboard on from the “celebration / evil side” of it to the “boycott side” as well. We choose to modify it to meet a need in the community; parents with kids looking for a safe place to take their kids “trick or treating.”

I like the trunk idea. But I love the plundering the Egyptian line…
