18 Dec 06 Funeral Service

Today I conducted the funeral service for Doris Roper.  Her daughters quickly described her as the virtuous woman described in Proverbs 31.  That in itself (to be remembered by your own children) is a great sign of respect.

Among the wonderful stories and memories of her life the daughters told of receiving their weekly allowance.  This would happen each week immediately after church.  The daughters said it was great incentive to behave during church and listen to the sermon.  That of course got me to thinking . . .

The service was held outside on a crisp, sunny morning.  A handful of people gathered to pay their respects.  And because I am a quick learner from the experiences of others, right before I stood to speak, I quietly asked the funeral director "on which side of the casket should I stand?"  Thanks again Greg.

   hmmm, maybe we should adopt that same approach when considering paying preachers……after the sermon.

   Always better to ask than look the fool. Believe me, I learned that lesson the hard way!

   I had the blessing of being a part of a couple of Catholic funerals. You always know where you are in relationship to the casket when you are in this type of funeral.

   Puck: That is generally true. However, I have managed to wheel a casket into a catholic church with the thing facing the wrong direction!! But I’m a rarity among funeral directors.

   Paying preachers following the sermon? Sounds like a Nielson Rating. I didn’t know that there was a (again, evidence that I’m a non-professional) “correct” side to stand with respect to the casket at a funeral. I just figured it was better to be outside the casket rather than inside?

   I didn’t know there was a correct side to stand with respect to the casket other than it’s better to be outside than in.

   I wonder if we could give members an allowance following the sermon? Would they behave better?

   RDW - assuming you haven’t begun blocking my comments already, you know that I would pay a tidy sum for you to preach. I’d even pay to hear you preach! Just make sure you’re wearing a suit & tie….
