Advice

This Sunday we will honor our graduation seniors.  Along with the standard presentation of bibles and a slide show I wanted to share some words of wisdom with the utes (from My Cousin Vinny).

What advice do you have (we’re all waiting to see what Greg will say) that I can actually share with the church?

And yes, I will quote and credit you.

For those that will become teachers remember my motto:
“Teach the best and shoot the rest.”

My biggest piece of advice: “What goes around, comes around!” My helpful advice I’m emailing you with the lesson I presented for this same purpose.

    Peace.

Perhaps you can use a famous quote from ‘The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension’ (full quote):

“Hey, hey, hey. Don’t be mean. We don’t have to be mean because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.”

So graduates, since ‘no matter where you go, there you are’… what matters is you and what you bring to ‘where you are’.

    or something like that…

Terry Rush has some brief, but good, thoughts at his blog: http://terryrush.blogspot.com/2007/05/jump-start-your-life.html

You could tell them how the world is going to be a far better place now that they are graduated from high school … how fortunate we are that they were born … all the usual crap we hear from high school graduates at their commencement programs.

Two things: 1. Live life with passion for the right things. Live it to the fullest for God. 2. Make good choices. Everything that we are and ever will be is determined by the choices we make wether for good or bad.

Anything from Bono tends to work these days.

As corny as it sounds, I tell my graduating seniors to find their joy. If they set out to get jobs because they pay the most or bring the most prestige, there are a lot of negative aspects. But if those are the jobs that bring them joy, go for it. On the other hand, if the lesser-paying jobs are what make them happy, that happiness will more than make up for lost income.

It’s a lesson that many people NEVER learn. But in the kingdom, we can learn in all things to be content.

Student loans DO have to be paid back, usually when you have the least money to pay it. Keep this in mind when considering that fancy on-campus apartment . . .
