Graduation I
We graduated (promoted) our kindergarten class last night. It was everything you would expect from a kindergarten graduation. I’m not even sure why school’s rehearse kindergarten graduations.
What I did not expect, but probably should have, was the reaction of the parents.
As the kids were walking down the aisle to enter the auditorium, about the third or fourth kid in, the parents (along with friends and family of said kid) began to wildly cheer. This, of course, caused the parents (and company) of the next kid to wildly cheer and so on.
You could see what they were thinking: "no way you’re going to out cheer my kid."
The cheering competition resumed during the presentation of the graduation certificate.
Honestly, get excited and all but come on, save some of that enthusiasm for 8th grade graduation or 12th grade graduation or college or medical school . . .

You’re so right! I’m not even impressed these days with a high school graduation. College and grad school, yes. Anything lower than that and what else does a kid have to do at that time of his life but go to school?
anything lower than a high school graduation seems lame to me. and the competitiveness of parents of elementary-age students—is terrifying. i had never guessed it and am now surrounded–i thought i would have some reprieve up to junior high.
and then…i feel bad for those first students where the parents were minding manners and didn’t cheer out.
I got excited this morning that I was able to put my shoes on.
I guess parents that are working hard need to let off some excitment now and again when the expected happens. Most seem out of the loop somehow in what’s going on………in their childrens lives.
Shoot, summer’s here. I say cheer for the kids. Some may never make it to 8th grade.
But I’m no expert, we even celebrate half b-days.
I’m with Brady. Can they “cipher?”
Hey, my favorite just-finished-second-grader gave me a gift yesterday. I’m not sure what it is. It was constructed using two popsickle sticks and colorful yard wrapped around them. I put it on my desk just to look at. I sure cheered for her because she made it and even more because she gave it to me!
make sure & post what you’re doing and the decibel level about this time next year.
Like l.marie.d said, competitive parents can be really strange to say the least. I coached baseball and softball for most of my kids’ lives and the parents can really get ugly when it comes to “their little Johnny’s” ability.
On the other hand, let them cheer. Life is a vapor.
I’m curious as to the multi-media coverage. Where there video cameras everywhere?
