9-11

(I plan to resume my series on preaching tomorrow)

Even though it’s been six years the images were still disturbing as we watched a portion of the television coverage. It’s nothing short of miraculous that more people were not killed. I’m not surprised, at all, by the feelings of sorrow and sympathy that surfaced today for those who suffered. I am surprised, however, at the bitter feelings that exist in my heart towards those who planned and carried out this act of terror. Last year I wrote about what it was like for us on that day in Arlington.

    Randy,

Thanks for the comment and reference to last year’s entry. It is important for us to remember.

I am disturbed by the number of people who are expressing a sense of “get over it” about 9-11. Probably an overreaction to what they consider an excess of media coverage… but I am appalled by the callousness of not understanding the loss of life and the impact on families and our nation. As one report from a father of a victim stated “I weep every day”. Surely, personally and as a nation, we can at least remember with compassion on at least one day.

I do not think it unusual to have some bitterness toward the people who caused this pain which has resulted in so much more pain with the continued fight against them. How do we love our enemies when they have so much hate? Can we ask the Father to forgive them when they threaten our lives and way of life?

I personally am torn, I was an objector to bearing arms during Viet Nam but I have to confess, I would against those who threaten us now…. is this ‘politics’ making me a hypocrite or is there a fundamental difference in what we choose to fight?

It is always good to ask the tough questions but it is more important today to look outward toward those who suffered and remember with compassion and resolve.

I read your post from last year again. The days of “over-reacting” are over as we live in extrodinary times when our very homeland can come under attack.

I enjoyed your first post on preaching. Keep it coming.

Isn’t it frightening just how far we’ve come since 9/11 in that now it’s political fodder rather than a date in infamy to be revered? Thanks for your reminder and for the link to last year’s post. When the towers fell, we said we’d never forget. It’s almost PinC (policitally incorrect) to remember.

i think some would forget because it recalls all that we’ve gone through since (between the media and the politicians…)

that day has continued to be a very real tragedy in so many ways.

we (as a nation) had hoped to redeem that moment in time by now…instead we are still left with our original fears along with the consequences of our response. and i’m not sure that is a bad thing.

it is good to remember that day. thank you for the memory.

I remember very well your post from last year. Thanks for sharing it again and for your thoughts on this sixth anniversary. In some ways, it seems like only yesterday, and in some ways, it feels like we’ve always lived with “9/11.” Those images will never be stale in my mind. The feelings that come with them…….the sorrow, the fear, the resentment and anger, the questions of “why”; these are an indelible part of most of us. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
