When You’ve Been Away

When you’ve been away life simply goes on without you.  I say this not only as a reality but a good reality.  No one should expect for the lives of others to pause just because you’ve been away.

Life does go on.

For some the routine of life mainly stays the same.

For others the routing of life is interrupted with the ocassional major blip on the radar screen.

Death.

Expected birth.

Decision to move followed by the decision not to move.

New job (where you are greatly appreciated).

Promotion to full bird Colonel.

These are the things I learned while catching up with our former neighbors.

When you’re given the chance to catch up and discover all that you’ve missed it makes you wish you’d been there.  It also makes you glad to know that life goes on.

Moving from the south where people, for the most part show respect for the dead, to the Left Coast where people, for the most part, show respect for nothing, I’ve seen just how little we are in the scheme of things. Life goes on with or without us and people move on with or without us. It’s survival … but I would like to think at some point we did make a difference.

These are very sobering thoughts for this Columbus Day! :)
Yes, life goes on. But the people we love go with us, if not geographically, in our hearts.

i like that you can sit and catch up and feel as though time really hasn’t left you as strangers, despite the many changes that life may have brought while away. life has moved forward through its many transitions, but the familiarity of your connection seems to function outside of time.

So good that you got to hook up with those folks on the east coast. I feel the same, that life goes on, every time we “reconnect” with folks from the USA. Happy and sad at the same time.
