A quick google reveals polar opposite opinions on what is referred to by many as the emerging church movement.
What strikes me, as it does in all things religious, how those who are vehemently opposed to something can be opposed in such a mean-spirited manner.
Forgot the buzzwords of postmodern, missional and emergent.
What do we need to learn from this movement?
What do we need to accept as a viable means of reaching this generation?

What I learn from the emergent movement is that everyone worships God differently and that heartfelt worship is always pleasing to Him.
Emergent has actually taught me to be more accepting of my very conservative brothers and sisters. I have learned to appreciate their need for structure, for solemnity, for tradition. My worship springs forth through laughter and movement and instrumental music…and yes, sometimes through incense and candles and stained glass.
But to God, it’s all good. As long as HE is the focus.

Sounds like “emergent” is another word for “autonomous.” We should all be striving to be emergent or autonomous regardless of how other local churches feel or criticize us. Perhaps if enough of “our” churches reached this status the voices of the naysayers will be even more insignificant.

Larson’s latest offering against a consumerism holiday season is to ask people to buy his latest book and accompanying musical CD … so we can learn how not to be so consumer oriented!!!
Actually, the closer I got to “retirement” from pulpit ministry, the less I cared to know about the emergent church. I just want to live for Christ in the moment of any given situation. Seems if we all did that, it might make a difference in the lives of those around us.

P. S. I have no idea where the name “Larson” came from except I’ve been flipping through a Far Side book! I meant McLaren’s latest offering ….
