Treasures

Parents tend to keep things over the years that belonged to their kids or were given to them by their kids.

My mom has been sorting through some of this stuff and “returned” some of these items to me last week.

She wanted us to have certain things as keepsakes.

The special part of course is you understand more the things your parents treasured and you understand the things that greatly amused them.

Not every keepsake is a constant source of joy.  Some reminders bring pain.

It’s a necessary part of life and a necessary reminder.

We take the bitter and the sweet . . .

The rain still falls . . .

The sun still shines . . .

And then sometimes Mom tells you about some of the things she DIDN’T keep…like that ‘68 Mays…and the rain falls a little bit harder.

We’ve been looking through a small mountain of photographs of the kids growing up as well as other family photos (parents, siblings, dogs) and wondering just what to do with them. We will offer to give the kid’s photos to them, but they will not want them as they really have no place to keep them and would not want to display them. What to do, what to do??

We have a sticky note on the side of our fridge. Steven drew it when he was 1st or 2nd grade - a portrait of our family with the words, “I love Mom and Dad.” How do you part with items like that?

Mom got rid of all my stuff. Even the pictures aren’t up anywhere. But there is the shrine to the triplets.

    But I’m not bitter…

what in the world kind of post is that? Are you just messing with us? What did she give you? I know it’s none of my business, but you brought it up. My mom saved all my legos which has been great for my boys, but most of my many, many Star Wars and GIJoes action figures perished before I could pass on the grand tradition of violent boy dolls to my sons. sigh.

Hey, thanks for checking in with me. I appreciate it. I’ve been stuck doing a 2 week jury trial that took me out of life for a month.
